Classes, camps, and events at Kentucky Mudworks, LLC offer a wet clay experience for adults and children. Using various clay building techniques (including the potter's wheel), students are challenged to think creatively, gain dexterity, and accomplish goals while forming friendships and having fun! Our studio is fully equipped with ten potter's wheels, a slab roller, extruder, basic tools, three kilns, and a variety of cone 6 glazes. Our store sells a large variety of clay, glazes, tools, and raw materials to suit all of your studio needs.

Making Plaster Molds

Plaster molds can be used for making tiles, pottery, and sculptural forms. In this eight week class, students will learn how to transform one form into many by making an original mold to be cast in plaster. Students will learn to properly mix and pour plaster, eliminate undercuts, and make molds appropriate for press-molding or slip-casting clay.

Wheelthrowing I and II

If you've never taken a wheelthrowing class before, but have always wanted to, then this class is for you. If you've got a little bit of experience throwing on the wheel, and are looking for the opportunity to learn some new skills, then this class is also for you! We're combining our beginning and intermediate wheelthrowing classes to provide more opportunities to more students. Beginners will focus on the fundamentals: centering, throwing bowls and cylinders, pulling handles, and simple trimming and glazing. More advanced students will learn techniques to push the clay further than they have before. We'll try forms such as plates, bottles, and lidded jars. This class is the perfect opportunity for students of all levels to learn in a fun, creative atmosphere.

Intermediate & Advanced Wheelthrowing

This class is designed for the student who has completed Wheelthrowing I & II (or equivalent), and wants to learn more advanced skills. Topics covered will include jars and lids, collared forms, spouts and pouring vessels, and learning to develop your own voice in clay. Students will make work to be fired in Mudworks’ gas reduction kiln.

Handbuilt Tableware
Students in this class will explore the possibilities of making tableware using slab building, coiling, pinching, and mold making techniques. We will focus on making decorative serving pieces such as vases, platters, and serving bowls, and some day to day things like mugs. We will use a multitude of textures, stamps, and carving to adorn our pieces, so keep your eye out for textured things to bring to class!

Handbuilt Mosaics

Mosaic is the art of creating images or decoration with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or ceramic material. In this eight week class, students will make their own ceramic tiles and shards to
construct a mosaic on a tray, pot, or other small item. Students will learn to roll, cut , stamp, decorate, and glaze clay tiles before starting the mosaic process. Students will then learn how to assemble and mortar their mosaics, so they can go home with a finished piece.

Tile Technique

Students will make flat, shaped, and 3-D tiles that can stand alone or be made into a larger tile pattern. We'll cover all sorts of decorating and
surfacing techniques using textures, carving, sgraffito, slips and glazes. Students will go home with finished tiles that can be used as architectural elements in the home or as a basis for a larger tile project.

Introduction to Woodfiring

Wood has been used as fuel for pottery kilns for thousands of years. Contemporary ceramic artists are drawn to woodfiring because of unique surface effects which show off the dance between clay, fire, wood, and the human hand. Deposits of ash and blush from a flame are desirable occurances formed during days of wood stoking. In this eight week class, Bardstown artist Matthew Gaddie will show students how to make wheelthrown work that is suitable for firing in his wood-kiln. Students will be involved in the loading, firing, and unloading of the kiln (plus restocking the wood supply), so please be ready to work!***

Getting the Most Out of Your Electric Kiln

During this 3 hour intensive workshop students will learn how to properly load and fire digitally controlled and sitter kilns. We'll go over routine maintenance, and learn how to control your digital controller so that it doesn't control you. Finally you'll know what's going on in your kiln, and how to give it (and you) a long happy life. This class is free to anyone who has purchased a kiln from us in the past year.

"Slip Trailing With Greg Siegel"

Artist Greg Siegel will join us for an exciting day of throwing, slip decorating, and general pottery shop talk. Greg has been working with clay for over 30 years, and makes high fire stoneware vessels and sculptures that are fired in his wood and gas kilns to produce pieces with strength and subtle charms. Greg's pieces often use animal imagery and patterns of color that add brightness to an otherwise earthy palette. He'll be sharing his techniques with us in the morning, and helping students create their own slip trailed pieces in the afternoon. A catered lunch is included in the class fee. Pieces made during class will be available for pick up approximately two weeks after class.

Terms like underglaze, overglaze, sculptural vs. functional, crawling, and crazing make the process of glazing a daunting task. This 3 hour workshop is designed to help you glaze with ease. We'll learn techniques for dipping, pouring, brushing, and layering glazes. We'll take a look at what's in a glaze, and how the glaze surface bonds with the clay. This class will make glazing less frustrating and more fun!
