Classes

At Kentucky Mudworks, we offer many different pottery classes and workshops throughout the year for both children and adults. Adult classes are 6 weeks long and meet once per week for 2 -2 1/2 hours. Adult class fees include 6 weeks of instruction, 6 hours of studio time outside of class to practice, up to 50# of clay, up to 1200 cubic inches of glaze firing space (plenty), and use of our class glazes. Tool kit required for class is available for sale new at $14.15 each (+ tax) or gently used for $8.50 (if available). Children's class fees include instruction, clay and tools used in class, glaze and firing of all work.

Adult and children's classes range in size from 5-8 people. Payment is required at time of sign-up to secure spot in a class. ****Registration will not be held without payment.****

Wheelthrowing - Ages 8-14

Children in this class will have the amazing experience of throwing on the potter's wheel! They'll get their hands dirty as they learn to transform a lump of clay into a useful vessel with tons of personality! Students in this class will have three 1.5 hour lessons to learn and practice on the potter's wheel, and one 1.5 hour lesson to decorate and glaze their creations.

Making Plaster Molds

Plaster molds can be used for making tiles, pottery, and sculptural forms. In this four hour workshop students will learn how to mix and pour plaster, eliminate undercuts, and make molds appropriate for press-molding or slip-casting clay.

Throwing With Porcelain Clay

Porcelain is a kaolin-based white clay that has a reputation for being both beautiful and difficult to work with. In this four hour workshop students will learn how to avoid the common blunders that lead to cracking, warping, and breaking while highlighting porcelain’s luminous qualities. Class is limited to ten intermediate and advanced students. Fee includes 25# of Standard’s 365 porcelain clay, and plenty of hands-on throwing time. Bring your tools!

Handbuilding & Raku Firing

Sculptural Handbuilding & Raku Firing
Local artist Wyman Rice will guide students through the ins and outs of making sculptural forms to be fired in his Raku kiln. Raku firing is an exciting hands-on process that involves removing pieces from a hot kiln and smothering them in combustible materials. The results are lustres, crackles, and smoky effects that cannot be imitated. The first three classes will be spent constructing forms using slabs, coils, and molds. The fourth and fifth classes will be held at Wyman's downtown studio for glazing and Raku firing. The unpredictable nature of Raku firing make this a very exciting class! Students may also delve into horse hair firing if interest arises.

Wheelthrowing I and II

If you've never taken a wheelthrowing class before, but have always wanted to, then this class is for you. If you've got a little bit of experience throwing on the wheel, and are looking for the opportunity to learn some new skills, then this class is also for you! We're combining our beginning and intermediate wheelthrowing classes to provide more opportunities to more students. Beginners will focus on the fundamentals: centering, throwing bowls and cylinders, pulling handles, and simple trimming and glazing. More advanced students will learn techniques to push the clay further than they have before. We'll try forms such as plates, bottles, and lidded jars. This class is the perfect opportunity for students of all levels to learn in a fun, creative atmosphere.

Students in this class will explore the possibilities of making tableware using slab building, coiling, pinching, and mold making techniques. We will focus on making a dinnerware set complete with a plate, bowl, cup, and some decorative serving pieces that stir the imagination!

This class is all about surface! Students will make flat, shaped, and 3-D tiles that can stand alone or be made into a larger tile pattern. We'll cover all sorts of decorating and surfacing techniques using textures, carving, sgraffito, slips and glazes.

Getting the Most Out of Your Electric Kiln

During this 3 hour intensive workshop students will learn how to properly load and fire digitally controlled and sitter kilns. We'll go over routine maintenance, and learn how to control your digital controller so that it doesn't control you. Finally you'll know what's going on in your kiln, and how to give it (and you) a long happy life. This class is free to anyone who has purchased a kiln from us in the past year.
