Classes

 Adult classes range in size from 5-10 people.  Payment is required at the time of sign-up to secure a spot in the class.  Class fee includes 6-8 weeks of classroom instruction, 8 hours of open studio time, up to 50# of clay, and use of our class glazes.
Tool kits may be purchased new at $14.50 or slightly used  for $8.50 (if available).

Handbuilt Pottery
Students in this class will explore the possibilities of making pottery using slab building, coiling, pinching, and mold making techniques.  Students will make forms such as serving dishes, vases, and jars.  Clay can be used to make almost anything, so come in equipped with your ideas!

"Around The World In Clay"

Art from Africa, South America, and Native American culture is the inspiration for this camp. Campers will use coils, slabs, and wheelthrowing to make African masks, Incan bottles, totem poles, and more!  We’ll decorate our creations with bright underglaze colors.

 Laura Ross makes pots meant to reflect the traditional values of fine craftsmanship, integrity of form, and usage to enliven our daily rituals and pleasures. In this workshop, Laura will demonstrate how to make a rectangular or oval lidded dish using throwing and handbuilding techniques. She will show us how the manipulation of clay is important for enhancing the fluidity and liveliness of handmade pots.

Artist Bio

I live and work in my studio along the Ohio River near Louisville,Kentucky.  My beginnings in art were as a painter, but I later found my way to clay and received a Masters in Ceramics from the University of Louisville  under the esteemed functional potter, Tom Marsh. I have been privileged and grateful to have enjoyed making my living as a potter since 1985, exhibiting nationally in galleries and juried art shows  throughout the country. 

Making pots has been a consuming passion throughout my career.  For the past few years, my focus has been on functional ware used for the table in a “gathering” environment centered around food.  Baking dishes, individual serving pieces for special events, and altered teapots are favorite forms as well as  one-of-a- kind sculptural vessels. 

Mosaics

Students in this workshop will learn to recycle old tiles and pottery into new creations!  We'll go through the snipping, glueing, and mortaring to give you the skills to make your own mosaiced creation.

 Recently described by the editors of ceramicartsdaily.org (Ceramics
 Monthly, Pottery Making Illustrated) as a "Master potter and impeccable
craftsman", Jeffrey Nichols will bring his unique approach to studio
pottery during this workshop at Mudworks.  Jeffrey will demonstrate his
wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques for forming teapots, as well as
eastern and western styles of teacups.  This workshop will explore issues
on how to create colorful surfaces that enhance form for functional and
decorative works in clay.  Students will learn to investigate non-ceramic
surfaces for inspiration, the importance of experimentation for the
development of new ideas and approaches, as well as how to integrate line
and form with surface for creating content.  In this workshop, Jeffrey
will demonstrate his technique for creating color and surface, giving
participants insight into its development and his influences.  Students will also have the opportunity to try their own hand at Jeffrey's unique surfacing technique on prepared clay tiles.

Bio

Jeffrey Nichols is a studio potter and educator living and working in
 Kentucky.  Exhibiting his work nationally and internationally, Jeffrey is
represented by several prominent galleries including Northern Clay Center
in Minneapolis, The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, and AKAR in Iowa City.
His work has been featured in American Craft, Ceramics Monthly, and
Pottery Making Illustrated, as well as two Lark books.  Recently, Jeffrey
was awarded the Kentucky Arts Council's prestigious Al Smith Fellowship.

Paul Wandless is an artist, professor, and writer.  He is the author of the book "Image Transfer On Clay," and will be demonstrating techniques for monoprinting and screenprinting on clay slabs.  He will focus on the use of images as a means of personal expression in creating meaningful compositions.
