Ceramic decoration with unusual, effective styles and a variety of textures can be created with AMACO Underglaze Decorating Chalk Crayons. The 2 3/4" x 7/16" chalk crayons come in sixteen colors ranging from intense hues to pastel tones.

Chalk Crayons can be used like pastels on bisque pottery, which results in a pebbled appearance. Colors may be blended or smoothed by rubbing with the fingers or a swab of cotton on a toothpick. Water color effects are obtained by brushing sketches with water. For fine lines, the chalk crayons can be sharpened. Small pieces of chalk crayon may be dissolved in water for painting or spraying.

Clear Transparent AMACO® Glazes LG-10, F-10, DC-10, and HF-9 are recommended as a covering glaze. Sponge on first coat of clear glaze lightly in order not to smear design. Let dry and brush on additional coats of clear transparent AMACO® glaze. This precaution is unnecessary if the glaze is to be applied by dipping or pouring. Pieces are fired to the maturing temperature of the covering glaze. When spray application of a covering glaze is desired, first refer to individual listing to be sure that it may be sprayed safely.

NOTE: The maximum firing temperature is Cone 10 for the following: Black, Brown, Dark Blue, Dark Green, White, Gray, and Medium Blue. The maximum firing temperature is Cone 5 for the following: Turquoise, Yellow, Dark Brown, Blue-Green, Light Brown, Medium Green, and Yellow-Green. The maximum firing temperature is Cone 05 for the following: Rose and Lilac.

If left unglazed, AMACO® Underglaze Chalk Crayons should not be used on surfaces which come in contact with food or drink. AMACO® clear glazes LG-10, F-10, and HF-9 or any other dinnerware safe glaze are recommended to be used over AMACO® Underglaze Chalk Crayons to make them dinnerware safe.

AMACO® Underglaze Chalk Crayons have only been tested and approved as dinnerware safe when applied and fired under AMACO® LG-10 Clear Glaze

Now more intense, with better working qualities. Underglaze Decorating Pencils are ideal for shading, fine line drawing or identification. Apply the underglaze pencil to bisque ware to create a variety of unique decorative designs. After decorating, dust lightly with a brush to remove excess particles.

Amaco Underglaze Pencils are sold in a set containing one each of the six colors (black, brown, blue, green, yellow, rose).

Cone 05. Although AMACO Opalescent Glazes may be used on any AMACO clay, they develop their greatest opalescence and most interesting textures when applied over red burning AMACO Indian Red Clay No. 67. Most of the AMACO® Opalescent Glazes have a high gloss similar to mother-of-pearl. Best results are achieved with three or four applications of glaze. On textured ware, the glaze flows thin on relief and thick in incised areas, giving an added dimension on the surface.

 

AMACO® Opalescent Glazes can be used very effectively in Raku firing. We suggest controlled experimentation with Opalescent glazes (for example O-42, O-23 at Cone 5, 2205°F, 1207°C). When fired at this temperature on the inside of a stoneware bowl, the glaze flows to produce a variegated bottom and thins at the rim to expose more of the clay body.

AMACO Opalescent Glazes are supplied in liquid, ready-to-use form in pint jars. They are applied on a mature Cone 04 (1971°F, 1077°C) bisque by brushing, dipping, or pouring. On red bisque, these glazes should be applied rather heavily, and a slow rather than fast firing is best. Firing range is from Cone 05 (1911°F, 1044°C) to Cone 03 (2019°F, 1104°C). Recommended temperature is Cone 05 (1911°F, 1044°C).
